A city staff report published this week says the city will spend $6.1 million over the next five years on infrastructure to expand cycling options and to upgrade pedestrian and bikeways.
In the last year alone the city has invested $10.5 million in bike improvements, while $2.5 million has been invested to bring together stakeholders to "assess the status and performance of bike trails throughout the city to gauge potential for future enhancement projects," according to the report.
At the end of Monday's meeting, the city's "chief planner" delivered an update on plans to update and improve the City and its services, including improvements on the Westside, an additional bicycle path, more street-level bike parking, sidewalks and shared-use sidewalks at intersections with pedestrian walking and biking facilities, and additional bicycle facilities throughout the city.

Shire defends roadside clean up delay

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has defended plans to delay cleaning the country's roads and motorways after failing to deliver on previous commitments.
A total of 17 sites around the country remain to be cleaned after a massive clean up operation last year, which hit road, rail and ferry traffic on and off the South Coast between Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Dunedin.
It was due to end on August 1. But work has continued until March this year, with many of the remaining sites to be cleaned still not being finished.
MPI's Department of Transport and Regional Development deputy chief executive, Richard Gell, said last year's clean-up operation had covered 5,000km of road in New Zealand.
"Some of our roads are over 100 years old so the overall road damage is quite extensive, if you consider all the equipment that had to be carried off."
The MPI and MPI Roads and Motorways Authority (MPNA) have a responsibility to help ensure that roads are in good repair.
In January 2016, the two bodies agreed the MMPI and MPNA would deliver an overall, seven-year plan to ensure roads were in the best condition.
However, in mid January, Work and Investment Minister Steven Joyce told Parliament the MPI was continuing to spend heavily to address a backlog of 1 million road repairs and to improve existing roads.
In February, the minister announced that a further 10,000 additional repair projects were needed across the country.
MPI deputy chief executive Gell said last year's plans to get the government's road, rail and ferry repair backlog down was a priority for the government.
"The overall $8.6 billion programme is to upgrade existing infrastructure, improve infrastructure that will prevent the need for new projects," he said.
"We can improve performance and reliability of those projects, as well as reduce costs."
